S is for Sewing Bookworm Blazer

We’re interrupting our regularly scheduled programming to bring you news of a super cute BOY PATTERN!

The Bookworm Blazer is from Stitch Blue Designs, and is currently only available as part of the S is for Sewing eBook.  You know I love those gals, especially Amy, and I’m dying to make some of the other patterns!

Bookworm Blazer is nicely tailored, and features patch pockets, French seams, facings, one or two buttons, and fantastic seam placement.  The sleeves are set-in, and ease in very nicely.  There is not a long sleeve option.

I love the tailored look of this jacket!  But beware, MEASURE your child before picking a size.  If I had blindly made the size 3, simply because that is what Mackathanial wears in RTW, it wouldn’t have fit. I took his measurements–21″ chest and 20″ waist– and found he was in-between the size 4 and size 5.  The directions recommend sizing up if your child falls between sizes, so this is a size 5 with a bit of growing room.  Aren’t those seams fantastic?

I chose to forgo nearly all top stitching on this project, and used blind hems wherever needed.

Can’t you just see your little boy off at school studying in this blazer?

The pockets are nice for storing rocks, sticks, and small toys.  Mackathanial wanted to try putting his muffin in, but I discouraged him.

That muffin was his idea.  I said, “after breakfast we’re going to go take pictures.”  He said, “oh!  Mom!  I have the best idea!  I should eat my muffin while we take pictures.  It will be so cute!”

Another quick thought about the pockets and facings.  I really wanted to do a fun lining in this, and then realized there wasn’t lining listed in the yardage requirements.  I went ahead and used white for the pocket lining, but as you can see, it peeks out a tad.  I would recommend doing the inside of the pockets and all the facings in the same fabric as your main jacket pieces.

And if your worried this jacket is to stodgy and stiff to play in….

It’s definitely not!

Had to throw this one in. Because boys.
